Over $1M In Homelessness Grants Being Given To Centre of Hope, Salvation Army, & Wellness Society

Three local non-profits are receiving funds to help them continue supporting the homeless.
Wood Buffalo council met virtually on Tuesday where they approved allocating just over $1.1 million to the Centre of Hope, Salvation Army, and Wood Buffalo Wellness Society.
The funds are coming from the federal government through the ‘Reaching Home’ initiative.
The Centre of Hope is getting nearly $317,000 for their graduate program.
The Salvation Army is receiving roughly $64,000 for their diversion program.
The Wellness Society is getting three grants – around $445,000 for their housing first program, just under $150,000 for their outreach program, and approximately $75,000 for a coordinator position. ....

McMurray Métis asked for the funding last month after the project’s original $44-million price tag increased to more than $74.7 million. McMurray Métis CEO Bill Loutitt told council the rising cost of building materials, especially wood, inflated the budget.

The Family Christian Centre wants a refund on property taxes dating back to 2016 and that 2021 taxes be cancelled. This comes to $42,815. The owner also wants a tax exemption for the Wheaton-Penney Family Childcare Centre and the Legacy Counselling Centre, which are located within the same building.

Council unanimously approved a $1.1 million project to convert two buildings into housing for Indigenous people and families impacted by COVID-19 and homelessness.
The funding is for the Tawaw (Cree for “come in” or “welcome,” and pronounced ta-WOW) Housing First Partnership between Wood Buffalo Housing (WBH), Wood Buffalo Wellness Society and McMurray Métis.

The project involves two Timberlea 8-plexes that will be turned into 12 units with 22 beds. A shared space and offices will be included. Renovations are estimated to cost $500,000 and the capital lease payment is expected to be $587,900. The buildings are owned by WBH. ....

Fort McMurray Indigenous homelessness housing project gets $1.1M from council

Wood Buffalo municipal council has approved $1.1 million in funding for a new project to help house Indigenous families.
The money came from the federal government s second instalment of funding under the Reaching Home grant. The funding is limited to programs that assist people experiencing homelessness during the pandemic. 
Three non-profits are working on the project Wood Buffalo Housing, McMurray Métis and Wood Buffalo Wellness. The three groups are collaborating under the name Tawâw Housing First Partnership. 
Tawâw is the Cree word for come in, welcome.   ....
