President Lazarus Chakwera has said government has put in place measures to see to it that Malawians are provided with safety nets as a relief from the challenges that are there due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

In his televised address to the nation on Sunday, Chakwera his administration has extended the moratorium for loan facilities by the Reserve Bank of Malawi to six months (up to June 2021) to enable businesses that are struggling economically because of the pandemic to survive. ....

ITSANANA:Tonse Govt Spends K631.1billion In Three Months

It has emerged that Ministry of Finance spent K635.1 billion between July and October 2020 amid less revenue collection of K471.8 billion during the period.
This development left Treasury with the option to borrow K163.3 billion from the expensive domestic market to finance the deficit.
The Nation analysis of the government expenditure shows that between July and October 2020, Capital Hill on average spent K159 billion a month against the average monthly revenue collection of K118 billion.
The development means that within four months, the Tonse administration spent roughly one third or 29 percent of the K2.2 trillion first substantive national budget some economic analysts christened as ambitious soon after Minister of Finance Felix Mlusu had presented it in Parliament on September 11 2020. ....

World Bank has expressed reservations with the Tonse Alliance administration’s K60 billion Affordable Inputs Programme (AIP) , saying the flagship programme is not sustainable and advised the Malawi authorities to review it.
One of the key promises for the Tonse Alliance in the campaign wass universal reduction of the price of fertiliser to K4 495 per 50-kilogramme bag
Tonse Alliance administration targets 4.2 million smallholder farming households will each access two bags of fertiliser weighing 50 kilogramme (kg) each at K4 495 per bag and five kg certified seed at K2 000 per pack.
In the K2.2 trillion National Budget, AIP is allocated K160 billion of the K245 billion allocation for the mainstay agriculture sector, representing a 78 percent increase from the K36 billion allocation in the terminated Fisp [Farm Input Subsidy Programme] . ....
