Former High Court Judge & Chairman of the Special Committee probing the Mahara Prison Riot, Kusala Sarojini Weerawardena handed over the report at the Justice Ministry. Committee members President’s Counsel U.R. De Silva, Justice Ministry Additional Secretary Rohana Hapugaswatte, Rtd. Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police D.R.L. Ranaweera and former Prisons Commissioner Gamini Jayasinghe were present for the handover. ....
Share: Colombo (News 1st); Wattala Magistrate Buddhika Sri Ragala ordered the Director-General of Health Services to cremate the bodies of 04 other prisoners, among the 11 killed in the Mahara Prison Riot, at the expense of the Sri Lankan Government. These 04 prisoners were confirmed to have tested positive for COVID-19 and the cremation should be carried out according to the health guidelines, the court further ordered. Further, court-ordered for the families of the prisoners to be allowed to witness the final rites being performed and for the cremation to take place, giving due respect to the dead. The Wattala Magistrate observed, the cremation of the dead will not hinder the investigations or aggrieve any party, as the court-appointed five-member committee had already obtained samples from the bodies for the investigations, and the bullets found in the bodies were handed over to the Government Analyst for tests. ....

At a press conference where emotions ran high on Thursday (24), wives and mothers of the prisoners killed in the riot said their killings were unnecessary. “My family tried their best to him on to the correct path. We even explored legal options. He was killed in vain,” said a mother about her son who imprisoned in the Mahara Prison and died in the November riot. Another mother alleged, she was not given any details about her son for many days adding the families urging for details of their loved ones were ill-treated and chased away. ....

Meanwhile, the Attorney General’s Department has informed the Wattala Magistrate’s Court that according to the autopsy report, the four prisoners killed in the Mahara Prison Riot, died of gunshot injuries In total 11 inmates died in the Mahara Prison Riot that broke out on 29th November. “The autopsies of four bodies have concluded as of now, and the post-mortem reports will be submitted to the court by the panel that conducted the post mortems. The panel consists of five members: four Consultant Judicial Medical Officers and a Ballistic Expert from the Government Analyst’s Department,” Police Spokesperson DIG Ajith Rohana said on Wednesday morning (Dec. 16). ....
Share: COLOMBO (News 1st): The Criminal Investigation Department, which is conducting an in-depth investigation into the Mahara Prison Riot that broke out on the 29th of November, has so far recorded 334 statements from 197 inmates, 107 prison officers, nine doctors, and 17 male nurses, Sri Lanka Police said on Wednesday (Dec. 16). “The CID has identified those who instigated the riot inside the prison complex and further investigations of the inmates are continuing,” Police Spokesperson, DIG Ajith Rohana said. In total, 11 inmates died in the Mahara Prison Riot and the identities of all victims were ascertained. According to DIG Ajith Rohana, the autopsies of four bodies have concluded as of now, and the post-mortem reports will be submitted to the court by the panel that conducted the post mortems. ....
