Ubiquitous. Delicious. Not entirely nutritious. You can find them on the street in Beijing and Brooklyn. They are a staple of both morning commuters and late night revelers, the apex snack, the Egg McMuffin of breakfast foods: The humble 煎饼 
jiānbing.
In fact, this past Friday was International Jianping day, so we re (belatedly) celebrating the fact that after all these years, we re still hooked. 
I also remember the days when my mastery of Mandarin did not quite match my love of the crepe. It is a simple dish, but there are several key components, and I was no doubt a source of great amusement to my fellow snackers as they passed their time in the  ....

Last year, news broke that Chinese Ministry of Education officials were gearing up to revamp both the HSK system and its associated exams. At the time, no concrete date for the updates was announced, however, that all changed earlier this month when multiple media outlets, including this one, reported that the new system would be implemented on Jul 1, 2021. Unfortunately, either the original announcement wasn t clearly written, or everyone is terrible at reading both Chinese and English because somehow, we all got it horribly wrong.
As a result, last Tuesday, Apr 20, officials from China s Ministry of Education, as well as university professors and other Chinese language educators addressed the (accidental) fake news. Capitalized Chinese? What is this, a March Fool s joke?
Alright, so we re not talking about literal capitalization. This has nothing to do with beginning a sentence or proper nouns. Neither, however, are these special characters some Gen Z internet slang. In fact, you may already be familiar with them, assuming that this cashless society hasn t cut you off from banknotes entirely. We re talking about the numeric characters written by bankers of old in order to minimize forgeries. Altogether, these characters cover the numerals from one to ten, with a couple of extra units in the mix, specifically 100 and 1,000. ....
