A plan by two of New Zealand’s largest electricity generators to create the world’s largest green hydrogen plant in Southland is fundamentally flawed, says one of New Zealand’s foremost experts in hydro schemes and electricity generation.
Meridian and Contact Energy released a report by global consultants McKinsey & Co on Thursday, as they seek interest for what could be the world’s largest hydrogen plant in Southland. Their supply agreement with Aluminium Smelters for Tiwai Point comes to an end in late 2024. ....

Five South Island areas are prioritised in the latest round of decisions from a tourism fund that is supporting infrastructure projects from Cape Reinga to Stewart Island and the Chathams.
Tourism Minister Stuart Nash has announced details of 57 nationwide projects to receive support from the Tourism Infrastructure Fund (TIF).
In April it was announced the TIF would prioritise Fiordland, South Westland, Queenstown Lakes, Mackenzie District, and Kaikōura, where tourism has been most affected by the absence of international visitors. ....

Government reveals Tourism Infrastructure Fund decisions

More than $18 million has been earmarked to boost tourism infrastructure, with extra attention for the hardest-hit South Island regions.
Tourism Minister Stuart Nash has announced details of the 57 projects to receive support from the Tourism Infrastructure Fund.
Those hardest hit from the loss of international visitors would receive more than half the funding, he said.
The areas include Fiordland, South Westland, Queenstown Lakes, Mackenzie District and Kaikōura.
The five South Island areas were heavily reliant on international tourism. Domestic tourism is experiencing a boom as Kiwi travellers embrace the call to do something new but these South Island regions are still doing it tough, he said. ....
