A patch of Velachery Main Road, near the Pallikaranai marsh, has turned into a canvas that supports a pictorial campaign to promote COVID-appropriate behaviour.
R. Sriram, a painter, and his two childhood friends K. Anand, an autorickshaw driver and S. Sridhar, a carpenter are painting life-size images that exhort passersby to wear face masks, maintain social distance, and be alert to the early symptoms of the Coronavirus infection and ensure cleanliness.
The trio started the work when the lockdown began on May 10, 2021 and they seem to have covered much artistic ground.
They plan to extend this art project to stretches of Thoraipakkam-Pallavaram Radial Road, Grand Southern Trunk Road, Old Mahabalipuram Road, East Coast Road and Anna Salai. ....

Work to widen a 13.5 km-stretch of the Grand Southern Trunk Road from Guduvanchery to Chettipunyam has begun. The road has a very high vehicle count of over two lakh a day, leading to congestion on a daily basis.
The NH wing of the State Highways Department has taken up the work on behalf of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) at a cost of ₹209.32 crore.
“A total of passenger car units of 1.92 lakh vehicles a day take the road. Even if the number touches one lakh a day, it is necessary to widen the road. This will help reduce accidents too since service lanes are coming up along this stretch. CHENNAI: It’s been more than two weeks since it stopped raining, but water is still flowing into the Thillaiganga Nagar subway due to its seeping walls. Motorists say this has added to their woes since the subway is already ridden with potholes.
The subway was constructed nearly a decade ago at a cost of Rs 10 crore. The 500 metre underpass connects Velachery, Grand Southern Trunk Road and Nanganallur. “The subway was slippery right from when it was built. Its dilapidated state coupled with poor illumination leads to frequent accidents at night.
Water seeps in throughout the year as it is constructed across a waterbody. In the rainy season, the underpass gets filled to the brim with water, making it look like a lake,” said P Jayanthi, a resident of Nanganallur. In 2011, the State Highways Department spent Rs 97 lakh to arrest the seepage of water. However, the effort was in vain. ....
