Citizens use public comment session against councilor over civil matters restraining orders

Public comments presented by citizens at the Ontario City Council’s most recent work study session on March 4 directed a slew of allegations at Ontario City Council President Freddy Rodriguez. Among those by Charlotte Kerftmeyer and Christopher Plummer were domestic abuse and using his City Council Facebook page to “rant” about his personal life or to “slander or abuse people.”
Chris Artiach said Rodriguez continuing to serve on the council, “it’s making the city an embarrassment” and said it was “humiliation.”
“All I’m asking is for the City Council to have a little bit of courage, look at the facts and not weasel away through loopholes and ideas about what a restraining order is,” said Jerry Ward, of Ontario who questioned councilors about their “courage” in voting Rodriguez as council president. ....

'I see us being the next L.A.': Business owners on the east side grow weary of issues with transients

Ongoing issues with transients, such as break-ins, burglaries, theft, drug activities including shooting up in public, used needles left on the ground, loitering, urinating and defecating in public, panhandling and myriad other issues are cited as the reason that frustrated business owners on the east side are meeting with Ontario Police Chief Steven Romero on Friday.
Some of the problems with theft have been going on for years, but business owners in that area say it has become increasingly worse. Several reasons are cited, including the break-up of a well-established transient camp along the Snake River in November of 2019, as well as the fact that the Malheur County Jail isn’t lodging people who haven’t committed a major crime, a step Malheur County Sheriff Wolfe has said was made due to needing to limit inmate numbers because of COVID-19. ....
