Group rescues 'lifeless' 100kg turtle from Mackay beach

A volunteer brigade has rescued a 100kg turtle found âlifelessâ and without a flipper on a Mackay beach.
Mackay District Turtle Watch Association member Ali Yates said she was checking nests at Illawong Beach on January 31 when a local alerted her to a 110cm-long animal in distress on the other end.

âWhen I got to (her), her face was in the sand and she was quite lifeless,â Ms Yates said.
âSo I got the sand away from her face to unblock her nostrils and poured some water over her head to wash it all away. ....

Aerial survey provides key info for turtle conservation

Turtle conservationists have unearthed key information about local nesting hot spots which will help in prioritising and protecting these environments into the future.
Reef Catchments staff have conducted survey flights over islands and beaches in the Whitsundays.
They also went as far south as Stanage Bay, which 75km north-east of Rockhampton, and as far east as Bushy Island, 70km east of Mackay.
The surveys identified both the number and species of nesting turtle tracks that had been made the previous night as green turtles and flatback turtles moved through.
The team also recorded the number of old nesting turtle tracks. ....

Plan to stop crushing of hatchlings on Mackay beaches

Every year baby turtles on Mackay beaches face being crushed to death inside the egg before they can hatch out of their nests.
Mackay and District Turtle Watch Association member Cass Hayward said cars, quad bikes and motorbikes rode over the beaches and foredunes risking hundreds of hatchlings each turtle nesting season between October and late-March.

“Four-wheel-driving over dune systems is bad at any time of year and can cause many problems including erosion but during these Spring and Summer months, there is the added risk of destroying turtle nests,” Ms Hayward said. ....

Residents claim proof of turtles nesting on Keswick Island

The spokeswoman said the department was working with Mackay Regional Council and Department of Resources to address resident concerns with island management.
“Sub-lessees continue to have access to the national park, esplanade and beach areas of the island,” a DOR spokeswoman said.

Until early December, neither lease holder China Bloom nor development manager Greaton were responding to the residents’ claims.
On December 7, Polymer Studios delivered a lengthy response to the claims on China Bloom’s behalf – including claims related to turtle nesting.
Neither Polymer or Greaton are now responding further to media requests. ....
