Auckland and Waikato District’s economic development
arms are working together on joint economic development
opportunities, outlined in an agreement signed
today.
Auckland Unlimited, the economic and cultural
development agency for Tāmaki Makaurau, and Waikato
District Council’s Economic and Community Development Unit
will work together to share information and support each
other in growing their regional economies.
The
agreement will focus on specific areas of collaboration,
including inbound investment introductions in each other’s
regions; sustainability and resource recovery initiatives;
economic development opportunities for the Hampton Downs
area; and using procurement for positive social
impact.

A call to slap a tax on residents travelling to other parts of the country for work or play is raising the hackles of provincial leaders. Hamilton has floated the idea of imposing an amenity levy on its satellite towns as it looks for new ways to fund the city’s upkeep. But any notion of a border tax being imposed on Aucklanders flooding into the Coromandel each summer has been quickly shot down by the peninsula’s mayor who has dismissed the idea as “bloody cheeky”.

Residents at Port Waikato want to be put inside Auckland s Covid-19 borders in level 3 lockdown, as they face a 90 minute drive to supermarkets and petrol stations.
As a million people up the road wish for their lockdown to be over, residents of a Waikato beachside community have called to join Auckland s Level 3 restrictions. Port Waikato residents facing long drives and waits for necessities like supermarkets, petrol and medical supplies want to join their northern cousins to make life more simple. At present they must drive 90 minutes to Te Kauwhata or Huntly to access key services – down a difficult, unsealed road.
