Covid-19 patient numbers have risen again at Portlaoise hospital where a third patient is critically ill with the virus, according to the HSE which has also confirmed that more than 1,000 people with the virus are sick in hospitals around Ireland.
Pandemic staff at the Midland Regional Hospital Portlaoise were treating 13 patients by 8 pm Wednesday, December 6 following the admission of two new cases according to the latest HSE Covid-19 Daily Operations Update for Acute Hospitals. 
The report, published on Thursday, also shows that three of the 13 patients are in the hospital s ICU having fallen critically ill due to infection. There were no suspect cases.  ....

'I can't risk catching Covid' – young arthritis patient tells of upset at cancelled hip operations due to pandemic


A woman who has been cocooning since the start of the pandemic has spoken of her disappointment after urgent hip replacement surgery was delayed for a fourth time.
Katherine Murtagh (24) has an autoimmune condition called systemic-onset juvenile idiopathic arthritis and has had surgery appointments cancelled due to the Covid-19 situation.
The artist, who lives in Tullamore, Co Offaly, spent Christmas alone to protect herself from the virus but she said it was upsetting to see friends posting pictures of house parties on New Year’s Eve.
Ms Murtagh started studying art and design at Galway Technical Institute in 2019 but had to leave due to the toll it was taking on her body. ....

The number of people with Covid-19 in the care of the frontline staff at Portlaoise hospital has risen into double figures with some of those patients critically ill with the virus, according to the latest HSE figures.
Pandemic staff at the Midland Regional Hospital Portlaoise were treating 11 patients by 8 pm Tuesday, December 5 following the admission of three new cases since Sunday according to the latest HSE Covid-19 Daily Operations Update for Acute Hospitals.  ....

The HSE s Dublin Midland Hospital Group oversees the running of hospitals in Portlaoise, Naas, Tullamore as well as St James s Tallaght and the Coomb hospitals in Dublin.
