The Tamil Nadu Electricity Ombudsman, Chennai has expressed displeasure over a unit of Tangedco’s Consumer Grievance Redressal Forum (CGRF) for neither acknowledging a petition of consumer nor conducting a hearing.
The very purpose of the constitution of the CGRF for protecting the interest of the consumers is defeated by such an act of the forum, it said.
In his petition, P. Muthusamy, a resident of Velachery, said he had applied for shifting 1kw solar roof top plant connected to his ground floor to first floor and as there was no response from the concerned Assistant Engineer, he filed a petition dated September 19, 2020 with CGRF, Chennai EDC/South II. ....

The Tamil Nadu Electricity Ombudsman has asked Tangedco to suggest an appropriate method to calculate electricity bills in case it is unable to make assessments of consumption due to factors like continuous holidays and non-availability of staff. It asked the power utility to suggest appropriate changes to the supply code through its review panel.
In case an assessment cannot be made on a particular day due to factors beyond its control, Tangedco could suggest the number of days that can be taken into account for calculation of consumption charges, and an amendment to the supply code so that the consumer and the utility don’t suffe ....

The Tamil Nadu Electricity Ombudsman has ruled that a no objection certification (NOC) from the government official concerned is required to provide electricity supply to houses built on government poramboke land.
In his petition, J. Soundararaj said he had sought a service connection to his house, built on a government poramboke land, in Vettuvadi, the Nilgiris. Tangedco had sought a NOC, which was later upheld by the Consumer Grievance Redressal Forum, Nilgiris Electricity Distribution Circle. He noted that the Madras High Court had ruled that electricity should be given to the poor and needy on compassionate grounds even if they reside on government poramboke land. ....

Holding that electricity connection is an integral part of the right to life, the Kerala High Court has held that it is the statutory duty of the Kerala State Electricity Board(KSEB) to supply electricity within one month after receipt of the application for power connection.
Justice Murali Purushothaman ,while dismissing a petition by two KSEB engineers, observed, “Water and electricity are an integral part of the Right to life within the meaning of Article 21 of the Constitution of India. Activists have raised the red flag against the new electric supply code formulated by the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission’s (MERC) new supply code.
Alleging that the draft new code has diluted several provisions in consumer interest, the state-level coordination committee of the Veej Grahak and Audyogik Sangathan, an umbrella organisation of state power consumer outfits in the state, has now approached the Maharashtra government, seeking urgent intervention in the case.
On December 9, the MERC had published the draft of the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (Electricity Supply Code and Standards of Performance of Distribution Licensees including Power Quality) Regulations, 2020, inviting public suggestions and objections till December 29. ....
