Local Matters - Wetland restoration begins

Wetland restoration begins
Clearing weeds such as gorse, and replanting, is underway in the wetland at Whangaparāoa College.
A wetland on the grounds of Whangaparāoa College is being restored, a small section at a time, in a project expected to take several years.
The school has more than 3.5ha of wetland, including two stormwater ponds. Work on its restoration has been divided into three stages.
The area is full of invasive weeds, including gorse, and assistant head of Year 7, teacher Julia Jarvis, says the first step is removing those.
Local environmental groups – Restore Hibiscus & Bays and Whitebait Connection – are working with the Year 7 students on the project. Thanks to these groups, the students are learning a lot about invasive weeds and how to remove them, native plants, water quality, and why it is important to restore the wetland. ....

A community pest plant disposal bin is to be placed by Whangaparāoa Library.
Weapons in the fight against weeds are being made available for free community use at a new Pest Free Backyard Tool Library, which opens this weekend. The library, operated jointly by Restore Hibiscus & Bays and Pest Free Hibiscus Coast, has its first open day on Saturday, May 8, 1pm-4pm. It is located in a shipping container behind Whangaparāoa Community Hall. The library lends items such as handsaws and herbicide gels to assist with the removal of pest plants. In addition, pet-safe rat traps are being made available at the tool library as part of the Pest Free Hibiscus Coast project. Restore Hibiscus & Bays manager Rachael Randal says initially the tool library will be open “ad hoc” depending on demand, but anyone can make appointments with Restore Hibiscus & Bays to pick up tools and herbicides. ....

Local Matters - Community's war on weeds

Community’s war on weeds
This core group of volunteers is undertaking weed and pest control in their neighbourhood.
Sea Cleaners removed rubbish from under the Weiti River dock.
A group of residents of Riverhaven Drive in Whangaparāoa are working together to rid their local reserve of weeds and animal pests.
Their efforts are being supported by not-for-profit initiative Restore Hibiscus & Bays and the Forest & Bird Pest Free Hibiscus Coast project.
Restore Hibiscus & Bays ecological restoration advisor, Kane Kvasnicka, has been running weed control workshops for neighbours living near the Fairhaven Walkway, alongside the Weiti River.
This area has one of the last mature coastal broadleaf forest habitats in Auckland’s north, but dense patches of wild ginger are preventing the regeneration of native trees. To date, around 15 residents have controlled approximately 80 percent of the wild ginger along the walkway and coastal edge. They have also learnt ski ....

Local Matters - Increased funding available for community weed control

Increased funding available for community weed control
If invasive weeds are a problem in your neighbourhood, there is a bunch of funding to help tackle the problem – double the amount available last year.
Local not-for-profit organisation Restore Hibiscus & Bays is on a mission to bring together, support and grow the network of community groups working in environmental conservation throughout the area.
This includes obtaining funding, which it passes on to groups and individuals who want to carry out pest plant control in a place that is special to them.
Last year a total of $20,000 funding was allocated to the region for small projects. It went to two projects locally – $2400 to support Hibiscus Coast Forest & Bird’s Pest Free programme, and $3000 for a contractor to control invasive weeds in Fairhaven walkway. ....
