As the City of Victoria moves forward with its plan to end sheltering in parks by March, a local development company has stepped in to lend a hand. Aryze Developments Inc., known for building luxury homes in the Greater Victoria area, approached the Greater Victoria Coalition to End Homelessness with an idea to transform 30 modified shipping containers into temporary housing. The project, called Hey Neighbour, has raised half of its target of $500 000 through crowdsourcing and will begin on the first 15 houses at the beginning of February. ....

Tenters to move from Central Park to Royal Athletic Park due to flooding

Victoria Fire Department provided new tents and sleeping bags as well as cots to people in Central Park so they can transition to the hardscape of the Royal Athletic Park parking lot. Warm and dry supplies will also be distributed to people living in other parks, Helps said.
Helps said B.C. Housing and GSL Group, which operates the Save-on-Foods Memorial Centre, are in talks about once again using the facility as a temporary shelter for people without homes. No decisions have been made.

Our Place serves Christmas lunch to hundreds in need

Chef Mike Radovanovic prepared about 400 plates of turkey, stuffing, gravy, vegetables and cranberry sauce that were served cafeteria-style to people sitting three to a table instead of six.
Rogers Chocolates donated 700 individual chocolate packages. Any left over from Tuesday’s lunch will fill the stockings of people living in supportive housing facilities managed by Our Place, including the former Howard Johnson hotel on Gorge Road East and the former Comfort Inn on Blanshard Avenue.
McKenzie said the former Comfort Inn is now housing 80 more people who were displaced by the November fire at the Capital City Centre Hotel.
Sitting alone in the courtyard just outside Our Place’s dining hall, Shelly Steele tucked into her stuffing and described the difficult year she’s had. The 51-year-old said she was evicted in June from a supportive housing building on Humboldt Street and has been homeless ever since. ....
