The Isle of Wight Council has agreed a 4.99 per cent rise in council tax and a controversial package of savings totalling £3.5 million.
The Conservative administration s budget for the forthcoming year has been given the go ahead, despite opposing councillors calling the plans scandalous and cruel .
At a virtual meeting this evening (Wednesday), Full Council approved the plans by 24 votes to 14.
Three per cent of the near five per cent council tax rise will go towards adult social care, and 1.99 per cent will be set aside for all other service demands. ....

The local authority will vote on plans at Full Council this evening (Wednesday).
The Conservative administration has put forward a raft of proposals in a bid to save £3.5 million for 2021/22.
This includes a 4.99% increase in council tax, as well as extra charges and service reductions such as:
A 7% increase on crematorium and cemetery costs.
A rise in overnight parking charges (£1 to £2 from October 2021).

THE Covid factor has made the Isle of Wight Council s budget the most difficult one of recent years, council leader Dave Stewart said today.
Households will face a 4.99 per cent increase in council tax, if the proposed budget is approved on February 24.
The budget is on target with £4.5 million of savings and is the required lawful and balanced but has been created without the Island Deal the council has been long chasing government for.
The council tax increase includes three per cent which is going towards adult social care across the Island.
Other areas to benefit will be coastal defences, schools, Branstone Farm development, disabled facilities, highways, IT infrastructure and the ability to make compulsory purchase orders. ....

In proposals announced today (Wednesday), the local authority has forecasted savings of £3.5 million for 2021/22.
The council is planning to make up 89% of the money through efficiencies and income generation .
If approved, it will mean a 4.99% increase in council tax - three per cent will go towards adult social care and 1.99% for all other service demands.
Last year, council tax was increased by 3.99%, with two per cent going towards Adult Social Care. ....
