Western New Mexico University held their hybrid commencement at 2pm today.
Former Regent Chair Jerry A. Walz and Former Senator John Arthur Smith were conferred their honorary doctorates along with the more than 250 graduates making up the Western New Mexico University class of 2021. The event was streamed live on Facebook. Special acknowledgement is extended to Keirston Bloomfield graduated with her associates degree in liberal arts even before she graduated from high school. She will graduate from Silver High on May 20
th. Congratulations to Keirston on her dedication and accomplishment.
SILVER CITY – U.S. Sen. Ben Ray Luján, D-N.M., traveled to southern New Mexico and west Texas this week to discuss a host of issues.
In Silver City on Wednesday. Luján met with he New Mexico Economic Development Department Outdoor Recreation Division Director Alexandra “Axie” Navas, Silver City and Grant County officials, and outdoor recreation small business owners at the historic WaterWorks Building to discuss how to strengthen the region’s outdoor recreation economy.
“As New Mexico recovers and rebuilds from the pandemic, our state’s outdoor recreation industry will play a key role in creating good-paying jobs and creating opportunities for small businesses,” Luján said in a news release. “I appreciated hearing directly from local leaders about how Congress can empower communities to attract more outdoor enthusiasts while protecting lands and waters for future generations of New Mexicans.”

The town of Silver City received $500,000 in state capital improvement funds from this year’s legislative session for ongoing repairs to the Silver City Waterworks Building, originally built by a private company in 1887 to furnish water for the town’s first water supply system. Known as the “Rock House,” it is the only surviving stone building from this era in Silver City.

The recent session of the New Mexico Legislature proved successful for the town of Silver City and its list of capital improvement priorities, as the town is slated to receive nearly $2 million for various projects.
