Photo / Supplied Northern Advocate Knitted banners A pair of hand-knitted poppy and star banners have ended their four-week flight around New Zealand with a series of stops in Northland for locals to add their Anzac tributes. Organiser Melanie Salisbury said volunteer pilots had delivered the banners to each destination where they were added to by local crafters. Donations were collected along the way and the completed star would be donated to the Starship Foundation and the poppy to the RSA. Northland stops included Dargavill ....

The Poppy & Star Flight – a nationwide fundraising project with 34 volunteer pilots each flying a sector of a four-week circling of the country – hits the Central North Island and Waikato over the weekend . Keith Pickford will land at Rangitata Island in his Auster MK 5 on Tuesday afternoon and the following day Russell Brodie flies his Tiger Moth from Rangitata to Timaru’s Richard Pearse Airport. At each stopover people have been encouraged to knit poppies as well as stars representing the Starship Foundation, which can be attached to artworks that are being carried around the country. The Temuka Knit and Natter Group has been busy knitting poppies for the cause. “I knitted 14 of them,” member Elaine Costello said. “It’s not difficult. It only took hour an hour for each one.” The poppies will be handed over when Brodie’s Tiger Moth touches down. ....
