Amazon to set up South African headquarters in R4 billion Cape Town development Subscribe The City of Cape Town has greenlit the R4 billion River Club mixed-use development, which will be the new home of retail giant Amazon in Africa. The development design intends to create a 150,000 square metre mixed-use space, divided into commercial and housing uses across two precincts. The developer intends 31,900 square metres to be used for residential purposes. The city said that the development will include both market-driven and affordable housing opportunities – the latter of which will be physically integrated with the other residential units in the apartment complexes. ....

EEIPs are South African Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (DTIC) approved initiatives, aimed at providing multinational companies an opportunity to take part in local societal development and contribute towards economic advancement and inclusion of black people and black-owned businesses in South Africa. The programis open to qualifying small businesses in South Africa who want to become AWS partners in the public and commercial sectors. “The AWS EEIP is an 18- to 24-month enablement and acceleration program for businesses with a turnover under R50 million,” the group said. ....
Government wants a new state-owned company in South Africa – to focus on data and networking Subscribe The Department of Communications and Digital Technologies has published its draft national data and cloud policy, which proposes moving most of the government’s data online. The policy seeks to ‘strengthen the capacity’ of the state to deliver services to its citizens, ensure informed policy development based on data analytics, as well as promote South Africa’s data sovereignty and the security thereof, the department said. This will include the consolidation of existing data-focused state-owned enterprises such as Sentech and Broadband Infraco, as well as the establishment of a new state infrastructure company, it said. ....
Amazon Web Services now offers an ‘intensive’ one-year training course in South Africa – here’s how to apply Subscribe Cloud giant Amazon Web Services (AWS) announced a partnership with Explore Data Science Academy to offer an intensive one-year training course. The course provides a fundamental understanding of software development and cloud computing technologies, giving students a competitive edge, the group said. Clive Charlton, head of solution architecture for the Sub-Saharan African Public Sector at AWS, said that 95% of students who graduate from the academy, find a job with an average starting income of R360,000 a year. “The courses are extensive, and we also know that the cost of qualifications and training is often a barrier to young South Africans upskilling themselves. ....
A South African tech billionaire is plotting European and US domination Subscribe Cartrack, a global provider of vehicle telematics and recovery solutions, this week published a business update with solid performance for quarter three, despite the challenges of Covid-19. The company’s founder and group chief executive officer, is Zak Calisto, who still retains more than a two thirds shareholding in a company with a market cap that exceeds R15 billion. Cartrack has seen its share price double over the past year, and a lot more than that over a five year period, in which the company has increasingly targeted markets abroad.
