Editor, Gazette-Journal: As director of the Tour de Chesapeake, I would like to thank the many volunteers and organizations who took part in this 22nd annual event as well as the County of Mathews, Mathews Visitor Center and Mathews Land Conservancy who have supported and encouraged this event for many years. This event financially benefits over 40 local civic and nonprofit organizations, churches and tourism-related and general businesses in Mathews bringing in thousands of dollars for these groups. We welcomed over 600 cyclists to the county this year a banner year! From the rest stops to the food to the entertainment to the activities provided, the cyclists couldn’t have had better! From the safety teams to the signage teams to the monitors, the cyclists couldn’t have been safer! From Tent City to the B&Bs to the Cottage Program, the cyclists couldn’t have been more comfortable and welcome! ....

After having to cancel last year due to COVID-19, Mathews County, along with the Mathews Visitor Center and Mathews Land Conservancy are teaming up to host the 22nd annual Tour de Chesapeake cycling event taking place Saturday. Though the event had to be “scaled back” in terms of offerings this year, restrictions were lifted in time to avoid capping participation. The event will welcome cyclists from around the state and beyond for a weekend of flat scenic cycling, local eats, toe-tapping music, and down-home folks to help out with whatever is needed, a release stated. ....
