The home team triumphed 5-4 over their Northern rivals in a nail-biting game finally decided on penalties. However, the game in July 1985 wasn’t played at the Manor Ground at Headington or at Old Trafford in Manchester, and the players weren’t fully-grown men battling it out on the pitch. It was a mini-tournament for five and six-year-olds at Sandhills Primary School at Headington. Even at that age, they had their favourite football teams – Oxford United were building up to their memorable 3-0 victory over Queen’s Park Rangers in the Milk Cup final at Wembley the following year, and the achievements of Manchester United were well known.
