Our Views: Fire consolidation should remain the goal

Imagine you and your significant other dating for months. You’ve talked about a color scheme for your wedding. Maybe you’ve picked out rings and debated how many children you’d like to bring into the world. And then he drops a bomb. He tells you he’d like to see other people, to explore other opportunities. But even so, he wants to keep up with the wedding planning. You might feel like Janesville and city of Milton officials felt when they learned the town of Milton is considering alternatives to a plan that would merge the Janesville and Milton fire departments.

Milton ambulance purchase, fire department future unknown

MILTON The uncertain future of Milton’s fire department is casting doubt on the purchase of a replacement ambulance. The Milton Town Board voted Jan. 11 to not move forward with the purchase of an ambulance until the future of the fire department is known. The Milton City Council has not yet discussed the topic. City Finance Director Dan Nelson said, “We were going to discuss it as we close out the books for 2020.” The town and city, joint owners of the fire department, each would need to pay half of the cost if a new ambulance is purchased. That cost after equipment is added is estimated at $142,500.

Three Milton City Council incumbents, mayor could face no challengers

MILTON The future of the Milton Fire Department is a popular topic among Milton City Council incumbents who are seeking reelection this spring. Three council seats and Mayor Anissa Welch’s seat are up for grabs in April. Candidates had until 5 p.m. Tuesday to file paperwork indicating their intent to seek office. As of 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, four incumbents had filed nomination papers. No one else had returned them. Council members Theresa Rusch, Larry Laehn and Bill Wilson all hope to earn another term on the council. Welch aims to win another term as mayor. Rusch said she wanted to see a few issues through to the end, such as the fire department, which has been understaffed for years and currently has a shared-services agreement with Janesville. Rusch has served for several years on the Joint Fire Commission, which is exploring whether the Milton department should consolidate with Janesville or remain independent.
