The first missionary settlement was established in Genadendal in 1738, after Georg Schmidt settled in the area named Baviaanskloof. The town was renamed Genadendal in 1806. South Africa’s first teaching college was also established in this historic town in the Overberg in 1838. Now Genadendal boasts being the first town in the Overberg to have hosted the opening of the Western Cape Provincial Parliament.
The village of Genadendal was a hive of activity on Wednesday 17 February, when Premier Alan Winde along with members of the Provincial Parliament and other dignitaries arrived for the auspicious occasion held at Emil Weder Secondary School. ....

Bankrupt municipality’s R735-million electricity plan raises hopes and eyebrows

Plans by the Little Karoo municipality of Kannaland to enter into a R735-million, 25-year electricity provision deal with a private company are being challenged in court. The bankrupt municipality has been under administration by the provincial government for four years.
ANC and Independent Civic Organisation of South Africa (Icosa) councillors in the municipality, which covers Ladismith, Zoar, Calitzdorp, and Van Wyksdorp, are fighting a financial recovery plan imposed by the Western Cape provincial government.
Among other things, they want to enter into a R735-million deal with private company Inovasure. But according to papers before the court, the municipality has debts of R91-million, of which 90% is overdue. The Kannaland municipality’s entire annual budget of R174-million is currently unfunded. ....

The Overstrand’s Deputy Mayor intends laying charges of crimen injuria and defamation against the Land Party and Zwelihle Renewal.
The charge stems from a Facebook post by Zwelihle Renewal that insinuates Elnora Gillion, Deputy Mayor of the Overstrand, and a group of “co-conspirators” are plotting to assassinate several people, including Gcobani Ndzongana, leader of the Land Party and Speaker of the Western Cape Parliament and DA Constituency Head in the Overstrand and Overberg, Masizole Mnqasela.
The Facebook post by Zwelilhle Renewal starts off by encouraging people to vote for the Land Party. It also accuses Gillion of trying to promote a “white racist agenda” by turning the “coloured community” against the black residents of the Overstrand and ousting black DA councillors. ....
