Wheat research gets big boost

The Canadian Wheat Research Coalition, composed of the 3 prairie wheat commissions, has committed 2 million dollars over 5 years to a wheat breeding program at the University of Alberta.
The investment will fund research with a focus on developing new Canadian Western Red Spring and Canadian Prairie Spring red wheat varieties.
A top objective is to develop three to five registered wheat varieties with early maturity, shorter straw stalk, and resistance to stripe rust and Fusarium head blight.
These are key priorities of northern Alberta’s parkland region, where the program is located.
Since 2013, the University of Alberta wheat breeding program has registered 14 wheat varieties. ....

The Maximum Revenue Entitlement is a form of economic regulation, allowing CN and CP to set their own western grain shipping rates provided total revenue remains below the ceiling set for each railroad by the Canadian Transportation Agency.
The Canadian Transportation Agency (CTA) ruled that CN and Canadian Pacific (CP) grain revenues for the 2019-20 crop year were above their respective Maximum Revenue Entitlements (MRE). Each railroad must pay the amount that exceeded MRE plus a 5% penalty.
Under the Canada Transportation Act, CTA is required to determine each railroad’s annual MRE and whether each entitlement has been exceeded. The MRE is a form of economic regulation, allowing CN and CP to set their own western grain shipping rates, as long as the total revenue remains below the ceiling set b ....

OTTAWA The Canadian Transportation Agency says both the Canadian National Railway Co. and the Canadian Pacific Railway Co. exceeded their maximum grain revenue entitlements for the 2019–2020 crop year.
The regulator says CN’s grain revenue totalled $933.5 million, while its entitlement was $930.3 million.
Grain revenue at CP Rail amounted to $999.2 million, while its entitlement was for nearly $997.1 million.
The agency says the railways have 30 days to pay the amount by which they exceeded their entitlements plus a five per cent penalty. ....
