Indonesian police crack down on West Papuan protests


Indonesian police drew rapidly to disperse West Papuan protestors in Manokwari.

The protestors were calling for the release of pro-independence activist Victor Yeimo who was taken into police custody over two weeks ago.
They were also calling for the release of other Papuan political prisoners, and rejecting Jakarta s plans for special autonomy in Papua.
Reports from the capital of West Papua province, Manokwari, indicate that as many as 130 protestors were arrested.
Dozens of armed police converged on the mobilisations by Papuan students and civil society members to disperse their attempts to hold protests on several occasions around Manokwari. ....

Two Indonesian soldiers killed in latest West Papua violence

It s the latest in a string of deaths as the Army s guerilla fighters trade attacks with Indonesia s military forces who recently mounted a crackdown on the rebels.
The crackdown was ordered by Indonesia s government following the killing of a senior intelligence chief by the Liberation Army in late April.
The government said Papuan fighters, who it now refers to as a terrorist group, killed the Indonesian two soldiers in Yahukimo s Dekai district two days ago.
According to the Liberaton Army, a third Indonesian soldier was injured in the attack, following which the Papuan group stole the soldiers guns. ....

Two Indonesian military officers have been killed by independence fighters in Papua as violence continues to flare in Indonesia s easternmost provinces.
An additional 400 troops had been deployed to the contested region after President Joko Widodo called for a crackdown, with Indonesian authorities arresting Papuan independence leader Victor Yeimo over accusations of masterminding civil unrest.
More than 30 civil society groups, including Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International, have called for Mr Yeimo s release, while the West Papua Liberation Army has said some of their members were killed and villages attacked by the Indonesian military in recent days. ....

Villages hit as Indonesian forces chase West Papuan fighters

Indonesian security forces have zeroed in on Ilaga district of Puncak Jaya regency in the latest stage of their Operation Nemangkawi crackdown against pro-independence Papuan guerilla fighters.
On Saturday, Papua media reported that the commander of a Liberation Army battalion, Mendinus Tabuni, had been killed in North Ilaga, in addition to another fighter two days earlier.
On Sunday, Indonesia s military indicated that two more fighters, members of the Lekagak Telenggen faction of the Liberation Army, had also been killed in Mayumberi, Ilaga District.
A spokesman for Indonesia s joint military (TNI) and police said two members of the Papuan group were killed and another was injured in an exchange of fire with the TNI. ....
