Matt Caldwell of RJD Appraisal, the Town of Rangeley’s contracted assessing firm, provided the information. Rangeley saw an increase in new real estate valuations of approximately four million dollars over the past year. The revenue from this additional taxable property is not sufficient to neutralize the $448,000.00 increase in Rangeley’s share of the school budget and the $220,000.00 increase in the municipal budget. The municipal budget would have risen by $175,000.00 more if the Selectmen had not voted to allocate that amount from the Chick Hill material money that the Town received during the last airport project. As a result of the office closure the January 4, 2021 Board of Selectmen’s meeting was conducted via Zoom. District 17 State Senator Russell Black briefly joined the Zoom meeting to update the Selectmen on a legislative proposal to expand the number of Franklin County Commissioners from three to five. An increase in the number of Commissioners would provide towns that pay a high County tax such as Carrabassett Valley and Rangeley an opportunity for greater representation in County affairs. Read Article At the February 25, 2019 Board of Selectmen’s meeting Guy Rouelle employed by Dubois-King, the Town’s airport consultant at the time, presented a solar array update. Mr. Rouelle provided information about FAA funding available to locate a solar farm at Rangeley’s Stephen A. Bean Municipal Airport. The Selectmen voted 3-2 to have Dubois-King move forward with an $18,240.00 solar feasibility study at their May 6, 2019 meeting. Board member Cynthia Egan suggested that the Board seek more information before signing this contract. Cynthia stated her research showed many companies did not charge for feasibility studies. Solar companies perform feasibility studies without charges as a way to attract new customers. Ms. Egan noted that the electricity produced at an airport solar array was required to be used exclusively at the airport.
