The number of cyber security incidents in Lithuania rose by a quarter last year, and that was largely influenced by the Covid-19 pandemic when usual activities moved online due to restrictions, according to the 2020 National Cyber Security Status Report.
Presented at the Defence Ministry on Wednesday, the documents states that Russia-linked cyber groups are also exploiting infrastructure vulnerabilities in Lithuania, carrying out attacks on Covid-19 vaccine producers.
According to institutional data, the number of cyber security incidents rose by 25 percent last year, and the number of incidents related to the spread of malware jumped by as much as 49 percent. ....

Audit Office: IT security of firms using X-Road not sufficiently checked

The level of information security of private companies using Estonia s X-Road® secure national data exchange is not adequately checked when joining and using the system, the National Audit Office (Riigikontroll) finds, though the system as a whole is reliable, the office says, and updating the stated government requirements on X-Road could fix the issue.
The volume of inquiries made via X-Road – on average, 133 million per month – means the provision of the majority of public services would be rendered either impossible or significantly more difficult should the exchange not be operational, the audit office also found.
Replacing data exchange carried out via X-Road (Estonian: X-Tee) with non-electronic data exchange would be practically impossible or at least very costly, the office adds. ....

Lithuania s authorities have started an investigation after Viktor Uspaskich, member of the European Parliament and leader of the Labour Party, advertised mineral water that he claims can protect from Covid-19.
The State Food and Veterinary Service (VMTV) launched the probe after receiving a complaint, a representative of the service Ilona Drulytė told LRT.lt on Tuesday.
“The law in European Union and Lithuania clearly states that such properties cannot be assigned to food products.” she said, adding that “this is a clear breach of the law”. ....

Figures from Lithuania s electronic health services system show that the country s coronavirus death count is higher by 153 cases than officially reported by the country s statistics office that receives its information from the National Public Health Center (NPHC).
COVID-19 is listed in E-health as the cause of death of 917 people,
Mindaugas Samkus, spokesman for the Center of Registers, which administers system, told LETA/BNS on Friday.
The latest figures released by Statistics Lithuania on Friday morning showed that the virus had claimed 764 lives in the country. ....
