Indian Institute of Technology- Guwahati, Shillong space institute sign pact

Two premier institutions of the Northeast the Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati, and the North Eastern Space Applications Centre (Nesac), Shillong have joined hands to work for the development of the region and create a pool of skilled professionals.
The two institutions signed a memorandum of understanding on June 28 aimed at launching joint initiatives including internship, joint degree, short-term training and student exchange programmes and joint projects, among others, an IIT Guwahati statement said.

Through this partnership, a multidisciplinary approach would be adopted to study disasters as the Northeast is prone to flood, earthquake, landslide and riverbank erosion, it said. ....

New Delhi: A biodegradable and compostable yoga mat developed from water hyacinth by six young girls from the fishing community in Assam could turn this water plant from a nuisance to wealth.
The girls belong to the fishing community living in the fringe of the Deepor Beel, a permanent freshwater lake in south west of Guwahati city, recognised as a Ramsar Site (a wetland of international importance) and a bird wildlife sanctuary. The lake has been a source of livelihood for 9 villages of the fishing community who shared this biome for centuries, but over the years suffered from excessive growth and accumulation of water hyacinth. ....

New Delhi: A promotional activity of the India International Science Festival (IISF), VigyanYatra vans were flagged off ahead of the science festival on Monday. The mobile science exhibition vans were flagged off from many cities of the country with the vision to promote scientific temper and culture of science among the people.
These vans are viewed by the students of schools, which helps in creating interest in science and also, spreads awareness about IISF.
