Halifax councillor seeks changes after demolition starts before tenant vacates building

A Halifax councillor wants better co-ordination between the city and the province around demolition permits.
The city has since revoked the demolition permit.
Shawn Cleary, the councillor for Halifax West Armdale, said the egregious situation made it clear that there was no alignment between the city s demolition permit process and the provincial residential tenancies board, which looks after evictions.
And so it would be, I think, very appropriate for us to not issue a demolition permit until we have some sort of indication from the residential tenancies board that any evictions in a building are complete and legal, including any appeals that the tenants have a right to do, said Cleary, whose district is adjacent to the Mosaik Pro ....

Permit revoked after Halifax building demolition began before tenant moved out

The Halifax Regional Municipality has revoked the demolition permit for a construction project at the corner of Oxford and North streets.
The decision comes after stop-work orders were issued in December by both HRM and the province when Mosaik Properties began tearing down the residential building at 6399 North St.
The demolition got underway before a final tenant had moved out and while a hearing at the Residential Tenancies Board was pending. The province s stop-work order has since been lifted, but Halifax s order is still in effect. The tenant is no longer living in the building. ....

Company's permit to tear down building to be revoked after 'eviction by demolition'

Halifax officials have given notice to a local developer that they intend to revoke the company s demolition permit.
The move follows a stop-work order issued on Dec. 4 to Ardmore Hall Inc., operated by Stavros and George Giannoulis. The parent company is Mosaik Properties.
Crews began tearing down a building at the corner of North and Oxford streets, even though a tenant had not moved out of one of the units and was appealing his eviction. ....
