PESHAWAR: Terming languages as a source of identity and an important part of the cultural heritage, the speakers at a conference on Saturday called for efforts to protect and promote them without any discrimination.
They were speaking at the 9th Two-day KP Languages and Cultures Conference which got underway at the Cultural Hall. The Gandhara Hindko Board and Gandhara Hindko Academy had jointly hosted the moot.
The moot was arranged in connection with the International Mother Language Day which is marked all over the world on February 21. This year’s theme for the day is “Fostering multilingualism for inclusion in education and society.” ....

Beijing, Feb 20 (Prensa Latina) China reported on Saturday that the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) included Mandarin in the list of languages that it uses in its work and official documents.
According to the Ministry of Tourism, WTO formally notified its decision, and its secretary general, Zurab Pololikashvili, recorded a video to convey a congratulatory message.
This Asian nation joined the UNWTO in 1983 and, 24 years later, asked it to include Mandarin as one of the organization s official languages: Spanish, Arabic, Russian, English and French.
However, Chinese has been used at the UN since 1946 and is celebrated on April 20 in honor of Cangjie, a historian of the Yellow Emperor and creator of the characters. ....
