Parents of students in remote learning don't have to pay childcare fees: minister

WINNIPEG
With students in Winnipeg and Brandon officially in remote learning, the province said parents of these students will not have to pay for their unused childcare spaces.
On Wednesday afternoon, Manitoba Families Minister Rochelle Squires said parents of students in Winnipeg and Brandon will not be expected to pay for childcare fees while their children are in remote learning.
Squires said the province is providing up to $1.9 million to offset childcare sector losses specifically in before-and-after-school programs, and cover school-aged parent fees.
The province said early learning and childcare facilities will be given a grant equal to the parent fees for the children who are not allowed to attend their before-and-after-school programs due to the shift to online learning. ....

The province says children who are doing remote learning shouldn t attend daycare, but some children – including those of critical care workers – will still be allowed to go to class in-person.
The rules are leaving some childcare workers with more questions than answers.
On Tuesday afternoon, Rachel Doerr picked up her two kids from school – the last time for a while. Students in Winnipeg and Brandon are set to move to remote learning on Wednesday.
I m extremely blessed. My husband works for Transit so because he needs to work, I can be and am allowed to be at home for my children so that I can give them the best quality education since schools are closing down, said Doerr. ....

New report on Manitoba childcare suggests higher-income parents should pay more

WINNIPEG
A new report on daycare in Manitoba says lower- and middle-income families should pay less while higher-income parents should pay more.
The provincial government commissioned the 62-page report done by KPMG which contains 10 recommendations.
It suggests the province consolidate daycare operating grants, childcare subsidies and other funding to provide more financial assistance to parents, known as a parent-based funding model.
It says the province could consider offering the subsidy when payment is due, through a tax credit or both.
Parent fees would be increased, but childcare costs would be capped as a portion of total income.
“This would help make childcare affordable for a greater range of Manitobans,” KPMG said. ....
