APMC traders seek longer working time on alternate days
The State government’s decision to allow Agricultural Produce Marketing Committee (APMC) yards to function only for four hours (6 a.m. to 10 a.m.) has been described by traders as “impractical”. They say that it would create bottlenecks in essential supplies.
They have suggested they be allowed to work longer hours, but on alternate days like during the lockdown last year.
Ramesh Chandra Lahoti, chairman, APMC committee, Federation of Karnataka Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said the norm could only have been introduced by people who do not understand the functioning of an APMC yard and the crucial role it plays in the supply chain. ....

Traders to extend only moral support
In support of the Bharat Bandh on Friday, trucks and cargo transport vehicles will not only stop plying, but are also expected to block all highways in Karnataka. This bandh has been called by the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) and All India Transport Welfare Association (AITWA) to protest fuel price hike and demand simplification of Goods and Services Tax (GST).
While the transport sector has decided to participate in the strike, the State’s trade bodies have only extended moral support. They have decided not to down shutters in view of losses already incurred due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, trade will be affected given that trucks will not be plying. ....

Transporters at APMC yards are demanding an increase in the trip rates following diesel price rise .

The rise in diesel price by over 6% (around ₹5 a litre) in the State since the beginning of the New Year has already begun to have a cascading effect. The transport cost of essential commodities such as foodgrains and vegetables has shot up, and is expected to be passed on to customer soon.
“When the crude oil prices are relatively low in the international market, we don’t understand why the Union and State governments are increasing taxes and cesses on fuel. An increase of even ₹1 in diesel price will lead to inflation and burden common people,” said G.R. Shanmugappa of the Karnataka State Lorry Owners’ Association. He said the recent rally in diesel prices was already making itself felt. “Our costs are shooting up. While we will ....

Minister has promised to look into their demand
Traders from the agricultural produce marketing committees (APMCs) across the State, who had threatened to go on a strike against the hike in market cess, have now decided to wait and watch over Cooperation Minister S.T. Somashekhar’s assurances of a favourable resolution.
The Minister met stakeholders from APMC yards from across the State in the city on Wednesday over the issue. “The Minister claimed the hike of market cess from 0.35% to 1% had happened without his knowledge. He assured us that he would discuss the issue at State Cabinet meeting on December 28 and promised a favourable resolution. So we have decided to wait till then,” said Ramesh Chandra Lahoti, chairman, APMC Committee, Federation of the Karnataka Chambers of Commerce and Industry. ....
