Every morning, Maria Zachariou, 83, sits patiently by her front door, dressed and ready for her day of programs at her local seniors centre. Then her daughter reminds her she has to stay home because of COVID-19.
Zachariou has dementia, and her family says they re more concerned about the impact of that missing social interaction conversations, activities and simple human touch than they are about the coronavirus.
Since the pandemic, her decline has been rapid, said Christia Zachariou, Maria s daughter. She said her mother has been having trouble sleeping, bathes less frequently and has lost interest in things she used to enjoy. ....

Dec 13, 2020 County government officials in the United Counties of Prescott and Russell in Ontario are acknowledging the challenges they have faced in responding to a COVID-19 outbreak that began at the long-term care facility that is owned and operated by the county.
The Chief Administrative Officer, whose role is like a manager of the county government, has acknowledged that the COVID-19 outbreak at the Prescott and Russell Residence in Hawkesbury led to challenges with communication about the situation.
Staff and management have been facing criticism as people complained that they were not receiving updates about their family members living at Prescott and Russell Residence. The situation was made worse because visits by family members were prohibited due to COVID-19 restrictions in Ontario. ....
