Keepers at a Queensland zoo are heartbroken after the death and euthanasia of Australia s last remaining lion-tailed macaques on the weekend.
The Rockhampton Zoo s director and curator, Liz Bellward, said Lhasa, 29, died in her sleep and the decision was made to euthanase her companion Dana, 21, as a result.
If we had decided to keep Dana alive, to keep her on display because she s the last lion-tailed macaque in Australia, we d be doing the wrong thing by her, she said. ....

Rockhampton Regional Council has shared the incredibly sad news that the baby of Rockhampton Zoo chimpanzees, Samantha and Alon, was delivered stillborn yesterday afternoon.
Parks, Sport and Public Spaces Councillor, Cherie Rutherford said the news is heartbreaking and something that will be felt deeply by the community.
“It is absolutely devastating to share this news,” Cr Rutherford said.
“Zoo staff, working closely with veterinarians and a gynaecologist, made the difficult decision to step in and assist Samantha with the delivery of the baby yesterday. ....

Shock and sadness are reverberating around Rockhampton Zoo after news chimpanzee Samantha s baby was delivered stillborn on Thursday afternoon.
A post on the Rockhampton Regional Council Facebook page revealed zoo staff, working closely with veterinarians and a gynaecologist, had made the difficult decision to step in and assist Samantha with the delivery of the baby.
She was due on April 18, and was reportedly showing signs of going into labour early this week.
She underwent a caesarean section about 1.30pm however the baby was deceased. He was a boy, the post read.
Samantha remains sedated this afternoon and her welfare is our highest priority. ....

Samantha the Chimp at Rockhampton Zoo suffered the incident this afternoon after veterinarians were forced to perform a caesarean section about 1.30pm.
In a post to Facebook, the zoo said everyone was devastated by the result.
