Ludhiana: Nearly 10 days after Union finance minister Nirmala Seetharman announced import duty cut up to 5% on certain steel products, a positive impact is being seen on the rates of domestic steel raw materials, which have come down between Rs 4,000 to 8,000 per tonne.
The slashing of import duty was welcomed by Punjab’s engineering goods manufacturing sector especially the micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME), manufacturing bicycles and its parts, sewing machines, auto parts, etc that had been suffering due to a steep hike in the steel raw material rates.
However, despite the fall in rates, the MSMEs are still not happy, as they feel that rates need further correction, since they are still very high compared to their cost 6-12 months earlier. ....
