NEW DELHI: Even as the country continues to shudder at the killing of 23 securitymen by Maoists in Bastar on Saturday, the shadow of death lingers over the dreaded swathes of land afflicted by Left wing extremism almost 50 civilians have been killed in the last six months in Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Jharkhand, Andhra Pradesh and Odisha.
In Chhattisgarh, 17 have been killed by Maoists this year while 15 were killed between October and December 2020. Police say while many are killed under the suspicion of being police informers, some who have left extremist ranks and joined the mainstream after surrendering have also become targets. On January 30 2021, Bhabani Shankar Patra, son of the sarpanch of Bhandrangia panchayat in Odisha’s Kandhamal, was branded a police informer and killed. ....
