WELLFLEET Fire officials say a large brush fire Sunday near the Cape Cod Rail Trail was caused by the improper disposal of wood stove ashes.
The Wellfleet Fire Department responded to a call about the fire at 11:33 a.m. Sunday. Crews arrived to find a large brush fire behind 15 Captain Bellamy Road, the department said in a statement.
The fire was extinguished in about 20 minutes, according to the statement. Fire personnel stayed for an additional 40 minutes to check for hot spots. 
Wellfleet fire Chief Richard Pauley Jr. said in the statement that 2,000 gallons of water were used to extinguish the fire. ....
