Conservation duo awarded top gongs

Queenstown’s power couple of conservation, Barbara and Neill Simpson (above), have been bestowed with Rotary’s highest honour.
The founders of the Wakatipu Reforestation Trust were made Paul Harris Fellows by the club’s resort branch at its ‘change-over night’ at Bazaar restaurant late last month.
The fellowships recognised their contribution over 40 years to ecology, botany and environmental education in the Whakatipu Basin and beyond.
The club also presented Hans Arnestedt and Helen and Tom McPhail with certificates of appreciation for their voluntary work for the trust, and made a $1000 donation.
Barbara says the fellowships were ‘‘very unexpected’’, and she was surprised at how much information the club unearthed about the many different projects they had been involved with over the years.

Farmers relieved as snow passes by flood damaged land

However, spokeswoman Sue Baird said while it was “filthy cold” on Tuesday, the district had sunshine and blue skies.
“At this stage we are not aware of any potential problems but we are keeping a watching brief.”
Further north in Banks Peninsula, farmers on higher ground were experiencing moderate snowfall.
Little Akaloa farmer Tim Coop said around 10cm of snow had fallen by 9am around the top of the farm.
“It’s not thick,” he said.

Power outages and widespread road closures as Polar blast brings snow, rain and gales to the South

Akaroa, Chorlton, Duvauchelle, Le Bons Bay, Little Akaloa, Ngaio Point, Okains Bay, Robinsons Bay, Takamatua, Takamatua Bay, Fishermans Bay, Hickory Bay, Otanerito Bay and Paua Bay were among the affected areas.
Most of these areas had lost power just before 8am and were expected to be restored about midday, according to the Orion website.
As of 11am, all but around 600 customers had had their power restored.
Orion spokeswoman Linda McGregor said there were reports of trees colliding with power lines across the network on Tuesday morning.

An Antarctic blast is sweeping the nation on Tuesday, bringing icy temperatures, blankets of snow and significant swells to the North Island.
High winds and thick swathes of snow have resulted in multiple flight cancellations and widespread road closures in the South Island, but the north is also bearing the brunt of the polar blast. The capital was hammered by hail earlier this morning, with heavy snow carpeting several areas in the north, including the rural community of Taihape, certain parts of Taranaki and the Wellington region.
