Southside Voices Play Vital Role In Plans To Revitalize "Nasty Branch"

One improvement proposed by community members for the watershed restoration plan is the removal of this chain link fence that runs along Town Branch/Nasty Branch, disconnecting residents of Erskine Apartments from neighbors and the community center.
Town Branch, also called “Nasty Branch,” is the longest creek that flows through Asheville.It’s also the most polluted. Environmentalists and residents of the Southside neighborhood are hoping to change that, and in the process, they’re also hoping to reverse the current of development in city.
The 1.6 mile stream goes by two names a reminder of the fragmentation caused by Urban Renewal. Southside resident and community activist Roy Harris puts it bluntly. ....

Asheville residents weigh in on RiverLink's plans Southside Project

A Riverlink project set to revamp waterways at Erskine-Walton Apartments in Asheville is moving forward with the support and input of nearby residents.
At Herb Watts Park May 11, RiverLink heard overall positive reaction to the plan to improve safety and water quality in the area, said Renee Fortner, watershed resources manager for RiverLink.
The project, which is being spurred on by a $30,000 grant from the Community Foundation of Western North Carolina s Pigeon River Fund, hopes to address flooding at Erskine-Walton Apartments, Asheville s largest public housing complex, by expanding an existing wetland, rehabbing a concrete stream and improving water quality in Nasty Branch. ....

A new RiverLink program is off to a hot start, allowing local volunteers in central Asheville to adopt a storm drain to protect local waterways from pollution.
The new Adopt-a-Storm Drain Program, a partnership with the city of Asheville s Public Works Stormwater Division, covers central Asheville, from downtown to the River Arts District and the East-End/Valley Street, Southside Community and West-End Clingman Avenue neighborhoods, according to a release.
It s a pilot program funded by a grant from the Community Foundation of Western North Carolina s Pigeon River Fund hoping to pair volunteers with a drain in their neighborhood. ....
