Ulric Herelle: From Turning Point to Church Leader - St. Lucia News From The Voice

Ulric Herelle
“One night I got home really drunk. I was barely able to crawl up the little hill that led to my home but somehow I did. When I got into the house, I knelt down and I told God that I’d throw myself in front of a truck if he did not change my life.”
Ulric Herelle was a wreck. His life was falling apart and he knew it. He was a slave to alcohol and he needed help desperately. Finally, he made a deal with God: either you save my life or I take it. That’s it, plain and simple.

I met Lena by the Derek Walcott Square recently. It almost seemed like she was in another world and I hesitated before I approached her. I worked up the courage and finally I said hello. She crumbled.
Lena
“My life is a living hell,” she said to me grimly.
“Someone is spreading rumours about me and it’s destroying my life. What hurts me is that the people who should know better, are actually believing these lies,” Lena said.
According to the woman, her life changed drastically after she walked away from an unhealthy relationship. Lena turned to a local church for help, hoping that her situation would improve, but unfortunately, that didn’t happen.

Monica Felix – A Lion, A Nurse, A Soufrierian - St. Lucia News From The Voice

Monica Felix – A Lion, A Nurse, A Soufrierian

Inspiring Women A Column by Rae Anthony
MONICA Felix is a gem. A retired nurse, she’s one of the most down-to-earth persons you’ll ever meet (if you’re that lucky) and she’s terribly sweet. I interviewed Mrs. Felix via telephone recently and she had me grinning from cheek to cheek. She’s truly a people’s person and it’s easy to see why she’s a member of the Soufriere Pitons Lions Club.
Monica has been a member of the club for years and she absolutely loves it. It’s home to her, and the experience, according to Monica, is like no other.

People often say that laughter is therapy for the soul. Just ask Lean Jean; she’ll tell you that these folks are absolutely right. It’s her favourite thing and it definitely makes her look younger.
“Once I get a good laugh, I’m good,” Jean said with a grin.
It’s no surprise that she is a caregiver. She loves helping others and she knows how to make people’s day brighter.  And, she started at an early age.
“I was in my teens when I realized that I was the kind of person who cared more for people than myself. I’m a certified caregiver. I take care of the elderly and I’ve worked in this field for five years. I’m also an early childhood teacher and nanny,” the 31-year-old said.

Ericka Brown – A Gifted Herbalist - St. Lucia News From The Voice

Ericka Brown – A Gifted Herbalist
February 4, 2021
Inspiring Women A Column by Rae Anthony
When Ericka Brown was a little girl, she dreamt of being like her mother. Her mother was a herbalist and she watched in awe as she changed the lives of others. Brown grew up in the beautiful island of Barbados and as soon as she was old enough, she started helping her mother.
She was a “mummy’s girl” and she was proud it. According to her, they were a “tag team.”
“It started with my grandmother. She was a midwife and she used to prepare local medications and my mum learned how to make them and passed it on to me. As a child, I would get excited whenever she made her remedies, because she was healing people. I used to assist her with everything. I went to the woods to look for some of the things she needed, I grated and pounded the ingredients and I did so much more,” she explained.

Inspiring Women A Column by Rae Anthony
Shirnella Monrose’s story starts on a sad note, but thankfully, the ending is different. After living in chains for a long time, the 29-year-old is finally free and she’s never felt better.
“I feel like running through the wind,” she said giddily.
We were sitting on a bench at the Derek Walcott Square on a lonely Monday. The weather was perfect and Monrose smiled as the sunlight hit her face.
“It feels good after everything I’ve been through,” she said.
