More charges laid against man accused in Whitehorse apartment arson

An Inuvik man charged in a Whitehorse apartment fire that left three people injured is facing three new charges.
Zander Firth, 20, appeared via video conference territorial court in Whitehorse on Jan. 12.
He was arrested following an alleged arson at the Ryder Apartment building in downtown Whitehorse that started the night of Jan. 8.
Firth was initially facing seven charges in relation to the incident, including three counts of arson causing bodily harm and four counts of breaching the conditions of a release order. He s now charged with three more one count each of arson causing damage to property, arson where the accused knows property is occupied, and breaching a no-contact order. ....

Whitehorse Daily Star: Residents return to fire-stricken building

Whitehorse RCMP say Zander Firth is now charged with:
• three counts of arson causing bodily harm;
• three counts of breaching conditions of a release order;
• one count of breaching conditions of a probation order;
• one count of breaching a no-contact order;
• one count of arson causing damage to property; and
• one count of arson knowing that the property is occupied.
The fire broke out at approximately 10:30 p.m.
The building is owned by the Yukon Housing Corp., which put the tenants of the 23 occupied units up in temporary quarters at a local hotel.
On Monday, many of those tenants were able to move back into their units. ....

Whitehorse Daily Star: Investigation into downtown apartment fire continues

Whitehorse RCMP are continuing their investigation into a Friday night apartment fire that injured three people and led to arson charges.
The Whitehorse Fire Department was able to provide only a short brief on the fire at the Ryder Apartment since it is still under investigation.
“As this incident is currently under investigation by Whitehorse RCMP, we are unable to release any additional information from that which has already been released,” fire chief Jason Everitt said.
Firefighters responded to the Yukon Housing Corp. building 6095 Sixth Ave. at 10:38 p.m. for a report of fire alarms ringing.
Upon arrival, heavy smoke and flames were observed coming from the structure. ....

There were flames and heavy smoke when firefighters got to the scene at Ryder Apartment near 6th Avenue and Lambert Street. Yukon RCMP say a 20-year-old man has been arrested on three charges of arson endangering life.
