How Should Sri Lanka Finance COVID-19 Vaccination Rollout?

An effective vaccination strategy is a necessity for countries to move beyond COVID-19. However, it also requires careful policymaking to balance the financial cost of purchasing and delivering vaccines while stimulating economic growth. This article, based on a recent IPS analysis, provides an overview of the approximate costs associated with the COVID-19 vaccination rollout in Sri Lanka and evaluates policy options to finance the initiative.

While there is no universally agreed level, considering the emergence of new variants, many experts agree that a country should vaccinate around 80% of its population to achieve herd immunity against COVID-19. The Leitner Center is pleased to announce that the 2020-21 recipient of the Vivian Leitner LLM Scholarship is Hijab Siddiqui, who joins us remotely from Pakistan. Hijab has rich experience working in human rights law in Pakistan, through capacity building, research, and policy development, while utilizing film and social media to create awareness on relevant issues. We are excited to have her as a part of the Leitner Center and broader Fordham Law School community.
In her work, Hijab has developed and conducted various trainings on international law and human rights for prosecutors, law enforcement, and media officials. She was a member of the core team that worked on developing the National Action Plan for Business and Human Rights in Pakistan for the Ministry of Human Rights of Pakistan.
