December 8, 2020 Every fall, more than half the coho salmon that return to Puget Sound s urban streams die before they can spawn. In some streams, all die. But scientists didn t know why. Now, a U.S. National Science Foundation-funded research team at the University of Washington Tacoma and Washington State University Puyallup has discovered the answer. When it rains, stormwater flushes bits of aging vehicle tires on roads into neighboring streams. The killer is in the mix of chemicals that leaches from tire wear particles: a molecule related to a preservative that keeps tires from breaking down too quickly. ....
DNDA hosted Wetlands restoration workshop set for Dec. 19 Thu, 12/10/2020 The Delridge Wetland, located on 23rd Ave SW and SW Findlay St, is a project spearheaded by DNDA to protect, restore, preserve and expand the existing wetland to improve water quality in Longfellow Creek, meanwhile developing the space as a public park for all to enjoy. Beside wetland restoration, other plans for the park include the creation of an urban garden, community orchard, as well as developing the space as an outdoor classroom for local students and the community to learn hands-on environmental science and wetland stewardship. Wetland Workshops The Delridge Wetland Park project is creating space for increased community use in addition to restoring a unique urban greenspace in the Longfellow Creek watershed.
