Pelumi Onifade: Lagos Govt. Challenges Jurisdiction Of Panel To Hear Petition

The Lagos State Government has raised objections to the hearing of the petition brought by the family of the late journalist, Pelumi Onifade before the Lagos judicial panel on restitution for victims of SARS abuses and other matters.
Twenty-year-old Pelumi was allegedly killed by police officers attached to the Lagos State Task Force on October 25, 2020 and his body dumped at the mortuary of the state’s general hospital, Ikorodu.
On November 6, 2020, his family had submitted a petition before the Lagos judicial panel with the hope of getting justice.
But when the panel moved to hear the petition, the lead counsel to the Lagos State Government, Abiodun Owonikoko (SAN) told members that there was a preliminary objection challenging the jurisdiction of the panel to hear it. ....

'It Is Long Overdue,' Sanwo-Olu Backs State Policing To Tackle Insecurity – Channels Television

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has backed calls for the creation of state police, noting that it is long overdue.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s
Sunday Politics at the Lagos House, Sanwo-Olu said Nigeria should make state police happen.
“It is long overdue, we should make it happen,” the governor said in reaction to his stance on the creation of a state policing structure in the country.
“In fact, that is one of the critical things that I believe will help us. It has been said over and over again.”
When asked if governors are frustrated that they cannot take 100 percent charge of the security situation in their respective states, Sanwo-Olu replied in the affirmative. ....

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu says his administration will support the Digital Switch Over (DSO) being embarked by the country, saying it would enhance job creation and content development.
Governor Sanwo-Olu who acknowledged that the DSO would be of immense benefit to residents said Lagos State would be providing publicity support for the rollout.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has admitted that the number of police officers manning Nigeria’s commercial nerve centre is inadequate for the city.
“We believe Lagos State is under-policed in terms of the ratio. We believe that the population is also growing but we do not have the same growth in terms of the number of police officers that we have. That is some of the places where the imbalance lies,” the governor said on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics while explaining his government’s efforts at combating crime. ....
