Urbanist Jane Jacobs coined the concept that new ideas need old buildings. It’s true. Cities where heritage buildings have been preserved actually enjoy higher density, more diversity and entrepreneurial spirit.

Imagine… An urban oasis that is safe, enlightening and engaging. A dynamic open space for festivals, performances, and celebrations big and small. A hub for activities for children, adults, and families all year round. A creative incubator and a place to network, exchange ideas and make connections. A place that promotes health and wellbeing, and A home and a community to many from all walks of life.
The demolition that started on January 18th caught many by surprise. There was no warning, no public notice of any sort. It came out of nowhere. Rightfully so, there was community outrage. In an email on Tuesday, the Ontario municipal affairs and housing ministry said it has sent invitations for virtual talks to the West Don Lands Committee, the St. Lawrence Neighbourhood Association and the Corktown Residents and Business Association. These meetings will be taking place shortly, Stephanie Bellotto, press secretary for Steve Clark, municipal affairs and housing minister, said in the email.
Bellotto said the ministry has encouraged the neighbourhood groups to bring members of the International Resource Centre for Performing Artists (IRCPA) to the talks. The group has proposed to regenerate the buildings as a place for musicians to work and perform and as a community hub for Corktown.
