Editorial — Safer commuting: Lower speeds needed for Route 11 between Canton and Potsdam


It’s well known that the stretch of U.S. Route 11 between Canton and Potsdam can be risky for drivers.
One particularly problematic section is the entrance to the St. Lawrence Health System Medical Campus. Located at 6119 Route 11 in Canton, it’s been the scene of some major accidents.
“The $23 million Medical Campus officially opened in March 2017, further developing the village’s outskirts. But the facility’s entrance is not always easy — or safe — to navigate. The southbound lane heading toward Canton has a wide shoulder [that] drivers sometimes use to turn, technically unlawfully, into the long driveway,” according to a story published Sunday by the Watertown Daily News. “Without using the shoulder and without a turning lane, drivers alternatively slow from speeds of 55 mph or more to make the right-hand turn. Canton awarded state funding boost for community trees


CANTON — Coinciding with Arbor Day, the state Department of Environmental Conservation on Friday announced $1.18 million in Urban and Community Forestry funding for publicly maintained trees, including those in Canton.
The village will see $32,000 and was the only north country community to receive an award through the second phase of the Division of Lands and Forests’ latest grant round for the Urban and Community Forestry Program. The state has issued more than $12.6 million in UCF grants over the last nine years, with this 15th round of funding being bolstered by a second phase of available funds.
Combined with the first phase of the 15th round, a total of $2.6 million is being awarded for 64 projects across the state. From 154 applications, the projects were selected based on cost effectiveness, community benefits, use of partnerships, inclusion of related education and local support, according to the DEC. ....
