Being a second-generation immigrant is a unique experience, different to that of first generations. As a child of Greek and Polish first-generation immigrants I have realised this from a young age.
Whether it was people not being able to pronounce my name or being served some sort of bland chicken roast at my friend’s house, I always recognised a divide between mine and the culture of other Australians.
The first time I noticed this was when I began to learn Greek.
Unlike many Greek Australian peers, I had a tutor instead of going to Greek school – so my sister and I had to figure out on our own why there were six ways of writing ‘e’. Though I never got to mingle with kids at Greek school I began to understand and feel a lot closer to my heritage once I started to learn the language. ....

Lalor North Primary School ignores Greek parent calls for return to three-classroom bilingual programme

Despite the strong efforts of the parents and the Greek Community of Melbourne (GCM), Lalor North Primary School’s Greek Bilingual Programme will again be run on a two-classroom system in 2021 instead of the three-classroom system that was in place up to 2019.
In comments attributable to Lalor North Primary School principal Dave Williams but issued to Neos Kosmos by the Department of Education and Training, it was confirmed that the two classroom system would be retained this year.
“We are proud of the successful Greek bilingual program at Lalor North Primary School and there will be no changes to the program in 2021. ....

Problems at Lalor North Primary School (LNPS)

The bilingual program of Lalor North Primary School (LNPS), the only such state-run Greek educational environment in Victoria, has been hailed by many for the excellence of its 45-year program. It operated as a three-classroom environment until 2019, however the decision to create a two-classroom model has caused concern.
Greek Community of Melbourne (GCM) Deputy Theo Markos has met with Lily D’Ambrosio, member for Mill Park, and Bronwyn Halfpenny, member for Thomastown, both of who agree that a three-model method would work best and stated an intent to meet with Victoria’s Education Minister James Merlino.
So far, the School leadership (Principal and Deputy Principal) have been unsympathetic towards the proposal for a three-model classroom and there is concern by parents that the historic program is being undermined rather than supported and valued by the school’s custodians. ....
