Radnor officials select new commissioner to fill Third Ward vacancy

RADNOR – Residents in Radnor’s Third Ward will be represented by their own commissioner once again.
Radnor Township officials approved the appointment of an interim commissioner to fill the vacancy created by the recent resignation of Damien Enderle.
At a special meeting, the six remaining commissioners and the chair of the township vacancy board selected Catherine H. Agnew to fill the seat until a special election is held in November.

Radnor considers tax credit for firefighters, EMS

RADNOR — Volunteer firefighters and EMS personnel living in Radnor could soon get a little something extra for their time and efforts.
Although the details need to be worked out, Radnor Township officials are beginning to discuss a plan to give qualifying volunteer firefighters and EMS personnel a property tax rebate or a stipend. The issue was raised at a board meeting this week by Commissioner Lisa Borowski.
“There are other municipalities that do this,” Borowski said during a board meeting this week. “Lower Merion for one does offer a volunteer tax credit for those volunteer first responders.”

Annual Einstein Walk & 5K Run will be in-person and virtual in 2021

EAST NORRITON — Even though the 18th annual Walk & 5K Run Through the Park will be a mask-wearing, socially distanced in-person event on June 5, organizers are confident they can recapture at least part of that pre-pandemic  feeling for everyone involved.
“I’ve been involved with the Walk for six or seven years, We’re remembering that pre-COVID time when we were running and walking with the kids and the dogs out there and this year it looks like we’re going to get back to that, which is pretty exciting,” noted Ben Altman of Altman Management Company, which manages the Residences at Bentwood and is co-sponsoring the Walk & 5K Run.

Censure effort over Twitter dispute in Radnor fails to gain needed votes

RADNOR — An effort put forth by one Radnor commissioner to censure another member over a Twitter dispute quickly died as three Democrats joined a Republican to kill the action.
At a board meeting this week, Radnor Commissioner Sean Farhy, a Democrat, proposed the board censure a fellow commissioner, Republican Jake Abel, for blocking him on Twitter.
Farhy cited the 2019 case, Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University v. Trump, where a federal court upheld a lower court’s decision that former president Trump violated the free speech clause of the First Amendment by blocking people on Twitter.

“The blocking of both public officials and/or private citizens is a violation of the First Amendment which he swore to uphold when he took his oath of office. The Board of Commissioners should formally distance themselves from this type of unethical and immoral behavior which has now been deemed by a U.S. Federal Court as unconstitutional and illegal,” according to a portion of the resolution that would have censured Abel.

Radnor considers bringing in retail coordinator for business districts

RADNOR – Radnor officials hope a grant will help them develop a plan to compete with other towns and attract new business to the township’s commercial districts.
At its most recent board meeting, the commissioners approved a motion to apply for a Keystone Communities Program grant designed to bring in a business district planner.
Commissioner Lisa Borowski said the planner would provide guidance and work with the Wayne Business Association and others, including some of the larger retail businesses and local universities.

“I think it behooves us to at least attempt to get somebody that would be able to help provide some guidance not only in providing an assessment but I think to help us with a process,” she said.

Scottsdale Mayor David Ortega is sworn into office on Jan. 12, 2021.
Scottsdale Mayor David Ortega reinstated a city face covering mandate on Wednesday, one day after he was sworn into office.
Former Mayor Jim Lane had rescinded the city s mask mandate in September, three months after it was first put in place during Arizona s summer COVID-19 surge.
Ortega told The Arizona Republic on Thursday that his proclamation strengthens Gov. Doug Ducey’s “Mask Up Arizona” campaign and Maricopa County’s existing mask mandate.
