LCHS students move to virtual learning

Leduc Composite High School students will be learning from home for the next week.
Classes were moved online on Friday, April 16 after approximately 385 students and close to 10 teachers were in isolation due to COVID-19, along with additional students that chose to stay home. When BGSD sought provincial permission to move to online classes, there were 15 active COVID-19 cases in the school.

BGSD Superintendent Bill Romanchuk said they implemented virtual learning to keep staff and students safe.
“For us the other issues were, we couldn’t get enough substitute teachers in to cover all the teachers that were away … the other thing is that our teachers were trying to teach the students in class and those being isolated. They were basically pulling double duty and that’s not fair to them and not healthy for them,” Romanchuk said. ....

Government action needed to help support schools as COVID-19 cases rise: ATA president


 
EDMONTON
As the number of COVID-19 cases rise in Alberta schools, so do the number of students learning from home.
The province says keeping students learning in-person is a priority for them. Critics say more needs to be done to support teachers and staff so that students can have safe in-person learning.
As of Thursday, there were active alerts or outbreaks in 478 schools across the province.
All Grade 7 to 12 students in both the Calgary Board of Education and Calgary Catholic School District will shift temporarily to online learning on Monday for two weeks.
More than 6,700 Calgary students and staff are in isolation as of Wednesday. ....

Active cases of COVID-19 in Leduc have gone from just under 10 in March to nearly 300 this week, as of press time.
Active case numbers hovered between four and 13 throughout March. In the first two weeks of April cases have grown exponentially with 57 recorded on April 2, 166 on April 9 and now 278 as of Tuesday, April 13.
