Firefighters Training to Become Blue Card Incident Commanders

Firefighters from across Benzie, Grand Traverse, and Leelanau Counties did simulation training on May 27 to become incident commanders.
Their training is through the Blue Card Incident Command program, which is a nationwide standard for communication and safety measures.
Firefighters learn how to command common incidents like house fires and apartment fires, and apply their training to tier one or two situations, like the recent wildfires.
Participants went through virtual simulations of incidents they would be dispatched to and learned how they would best command a crew.
“We want the incident commanders to have full control of the radio, we want them to drive the communications,” said Dan Dawe, Blue Card coordinator for the Regional Alliance of Firefighter Training. “It provides for better accountability and, again, better safety.” ....

The Grand Traverse Community Foundation is offering a number of scholarships for area students. (Courtesy Photo/Pixabay)
TRAVERSE CITY – Students in Antrim, Benzie, Grand Traverse, Kalkaska, and Leelanau Counties have the chance to pursue an array of scholarship opportunities for the 2021-2022 school year through the Grand Traverse Regional Community Foundation.
The Community Foundation offers over 90 unique scholarships to eligible graduating high school seniors, current college students, and students pursuing vocational training and trade professions.
Applications open on Jan. 15. Scholarship applications are due March 1, but students are encouraged to begin their applications now. Certain scholarships require a separate application, and some may have different deadlines and supplemental materials required. To apply or for more informa ....
