'Wet weekend' anticipated

While thunderstorms may be possible this weekend, the local emergency management director thinks the risk of severe weather will be low.
Chuck Magaha, director of Leavenworth County Emergency Management, said more severe weather likely will stay west of Leavenworth County.
Magaha said there is still a chance local residents could see a strong thunderstorm with 50-60 mph winds and hail.
He said a series of storms over the weekend may result in one to two inches of rain.
“It’s going to be a wet weekend,” he said.
Magaha said the rainfall could lead to minor flooding along creeks and tributaries. ....

Snowfall exceeds four inches


As much as 4.5 inches of snow fell in Leavenworth County during Tuesday morning’s wintry storm.
But most of the snow had melted by the afternoon.
Chuck Magaha, director of Leavenworth County Emergency Management, said snowfall in the county ranged between three and 4.5 inches.
Despite the snowfall totals, many hard surface roads in the community did not have much snow accumulation Tuesday morning.
Magaha said the surface temperatures of these paved streets were warm enough to prevent accumulation. He said most of the snow accumulation from Tuesday morning’s storm occurred on grassy and elevated surfaces.
While Tuesday’s snowstorm may seem uncommon for the month of April, Magaha said such storms are not unheard of. ....

Winter weather advisory issued


While it is officially spring, the next two days may seem more like winter.
A winter weather advisory is scheduled to be in effect from 10 p.m. today to 10 a.m. Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.
Chuck Magaha, director of Leavenworth County Emergency Management, said snow accumulation for tonight and Tuesday morning may range from one and two inches. He said streets in the area may become slushy.
“But I think most of (the snow accumulation) will be on the grassy surfaces,” he said.
Magaha believes the snow will melt Tuesday afternoon.
High temperatures in the area are expected to reach the mid 40s. ....
