NTA revives €4.5bn underground rail plan to link Heuston Station to Dart


 
The Dart underground project, shelved a decade ago following the economic crash, is being resurrected by the National Transport Authority (NTA), documents reveal.
The €4.5 billion underground line to link Heuston Station to the Dart line by tunnelling under the city via St Stephen’s Green was one of the “big three” transport projects planned during the boom, along with the Luas Cross City and the Metro.
While the new Luas opened in December 2017, and a planning application for the Metro is due to be submitted to An Bord Pleanála shortly, the underground – by far the most expensive of the three projects at the time – was shelved in 2011. ....

Luas operator blames pay hikes for increased losses


The operator of Dublin’s Luas tram system said its earnings declined in 2019 because salaries at the company rose faster than the consumer price index.
Newly-filed accounts for Transdev Dublin Light Rail show that revenue hit €43.5m in 2019 compared to €38.7m in 2018.
But the increase was due to the inclusion of a new maintenance contract it secured towards the end of 2019. The maintenance of the Luas infrastructure had previously been undertaken by the Irish arm of French firm Alstom, which also manufactured the Luas carriages.
The Dublin Luas business made a loss of almost €2.6m before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation during the year. That compared to a loss of just over €2m the previous year. ....

Dublin City Council has given the green light to €475 million plans to construct a large scale mixed use scheme for the redevelopment of DIT s former Kevin Street Campus.
Last May, Westridge Real Estate lodged plans for the development of 53,110 ft of office accommodation in two 11-storey blocks alongside 299 build to rent apartments across three buildings of up to 14 storeys in height.
Westridge acquired the 3.57 acre site for €140 million in August 2019 and a report lodged with the plans by EY estimates that the total output that the redevelopment will generate over 10 years is €7.67 billion. ....
